Airway orthodontics looks beyond straight teeth to evaluate how the upper and lower jaws, palate, and facial structure influence breathing—especially during sleep. When the jaws are narrow or underdeveloped, the airway can become restricted, increasing the risk of mouth breathing, snoring, restless sleep, and even sleep-disordered breathing such as Obstructive Sleep Apnea. By guiding proper jaw growth and expanding the arches when appropriate, airway-focused treatment can help create more space for the tongue and improve airflow.
Healthy breathing plays a critical role in:
✅ Quality sleep
✅ Cognitive focus and learning in children
✅ Energy levels and mood
✅ Proper facial growth and development
✅ Long-term oral and overall health
Children who struggle with airway restriction may show signs such as chronic mouth breathing, snoring, teeth grinding, dark circles under the eyes, attention difficulties, or crowded teeth. Early evaluation allows us to identify concerns before they progress.
We take a comprehensive, growth-conscious approach. Ideally, we prefer to see patients near the American Academy of Orthodontics recommended age of 7 years old. We will see patients earlier than 7 years old if complex dental, skeletal, or airway concerns are present. We strive to take a preventative approach to aid in dental and skeletal development of the jaws while the jaws are in their growth stages. Early expansion of the dental arches can reduce the need for more invasive procedures such as dental extractions, resorptive damage to teeth roots, reduced dental impactions, and reduced need for surgical intervention. While not every growing child needs early orthodontic treatment, we are happy to assess and make a recommendation for each patient with a complementary consultation. Our doctors take the following approach to assess, diagnose, and provide a comprehensive treatment plan for our patients:
For younger patients, early orthodontic treatment can help guide proper jaw development while the bones are still growing—often preventing future problems in the permanent dentition.
